The Argut River is one of the largest tributaries of the Katun. The name is originate from the Altai "arhyt" - a bag for koumiss preparation. River Ak-Alaha and Dzhazator merges together as a “bag”, forming majestic and formidable the Argut. The river is famous for its rapids characterized by 6 categories of complexity, and Karagemskyi breakout is even higher. The Argut has a large water consumption, which is much dependent on tributaries originated in glaciers of Katun and Chuya ranges mainly. Pool of Argut has a quiet rivers and streams of Ukok plateau, strong milky white tributaries with boiling vortexes starting from glaciers, and a transparent, clear, swift streams flowing from lakes.

Karagemskyi breakout is five kilometer canyon where powerful Argut with huge water flow cutting its way through Katun ridge. Element shows its energy in a full way so that even watching from above make uncomfortable and not many dare to storm Karagemskyi breakout. Several attempts to pass this obstacle are known in boating history and some of them was tragically. Indispensable tool for the obstacle is a bagel, a special vessel for challenging rivers, but even using that rowers cannot do much to impact after jumping down. Stream is so powerful as an overload, so people just try to keep on boat falling into obstacles one after another. Also rafters should be more careful not to cut into rocks in the mainstream.

Argut shores landscapes are stunning picturesque. It are hillsides adorned with patterns of creeping juniper and larch forests, rock cliffs and snow-capped mountain peaks, golden steppe spangled with stones. View of Samaha steppe opening Tyumoynak pass (a “camel neck”) is incredibly beautiful. It is clearly seen as the Koksa River rushing to meet with the Argut river. Spectacular views are from the road passing over Karagemskyi breakthrough. Dizzying precipice is on one hand, with raging Argut down below, stone walls steep arising up the mountain are from other side. Narrow ribbon of the road seems as a thread on steep slope on a distance. Travel Argut is interesting by various kinds of flora and fauna peculiar to the Altai Mountains, as the Argut flows through all high-rise zone, typical of Central Altai: alpine, forest and steppe. The Argut is one of the few places in the Altai, where Snow leopard (irbis) inhabits. The Argut and its tributaries - Karageme, Yungure, Siauliai are rish of fish: such as grayling in the lower reaches and uskuch and trout.

Argut River valley is rich of archaeological sites. Burial mounds are found everywhere as winter cabins, a square building with flat roof covered with logs and turf as a rule. In addition to burial mounds there are stone fences, balbals and stone sculptures. Near these wild places is Djazator, one of the most remote villages of the republic, and Arhyt, a small village of a few houses. Winter huts are inhabited only on summer.
